U.S. government plans new ‘climate service’ agency
(AFP) US President Barack Obama's administration announced plans Monday for a new office handling climate change, aiming to help businesses chart future plans as the nation shifts to a greener economy. The first practical effect was the creation of a website, www.climate.gov, which came online Monday and brings together government resources on climate change for business, scholars and the general public. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said that the new Climate Service would help businesses on subjects such as wind power by providing data on wind patterns which they would need to expand. U.S. missile defense plans aimed at Russia, top military official says
(AFP) The United States on Tuesday denied Moscow's latest charge that US missile defense plans in Europe are aimed at Russia, insisting they are directed at Iran. "The emerging missile defense architecture in Europe is not aimed at Russia, but rather the emerging threat from Iran," said State Department spokesman Philip Crowley. "We continue to discuss ways in which we can cooperate with Russia on missile defense." The head of Russia's armed forces, General Nikolai Makarov, was earlier quoted by Russian news agencies as saying, "The development and deployment of missile defenses is aimed against the Russian Federation."

Americans Helped Corrupt African Leaders Spend Their Money in the U.S.
(All Gov) For some Americans it’s no questions asked. Bring your millions of dollars looted from foreign treasuries and spend lavishly in the United States, or simply stuff it into domestic bank accounts, including bundles of cash smuggled in on the persons of world leaders. The U.S. Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations latest report (Keeping Foreign Corruption Out of the United States: Four Case Histories) details the lives of rich African despots who have funneled huge sums into the country, all with the help of morally-flexible Americans. There’s Omar Bongo, president of Gabon, who was aided by lobbyist Jeffrey Birrell in ...
Canada: Sales Halt Ordered for Thousands of Natural Health Products
(National Post) Makers of natural-health products say they are bracing for widespread layoffs and millions of dollars in losses after Canada’s pharmacy regulators issued a surprise directive recently urging druggists to stop selling unlicensed natural remedies. The order affects thousands of herbal treatments, multi-vitamins and other products, most of them waiting for approval from Health Canada under a backlogged, five-year-old program to regulate natural-health goods. The National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) says pharmacists cannot be assured the products are safe until they are granted a government licence, and should not sell them in those circumstances. “Pharmacists are obliged to hold the ...
Blair attacks Iraq Inquiry as part of Britain’s ‘obsession with conspiracy theories’
(Daily Mail) Tony Blair yesterday launched an extraordinary attack on the Iraq inquiry - as the chairman warned that he and others could be recalled over 'gaps' in their evidence. In an outspoken interview in the U.S., the former prime minister dismissed the inquiry as part of a ' continual desire to sort of uncover some great conspiracy'. Speaking on Fox News he said critics of the war were obsessed with conspiracy theories, and refused to accept that his motives were 'genuine'. Asked about why the inquiry was being held he said: 'There's always got to be a scandal as to why you hold ...
US military vows to stay course in Haiti
(AFP) The battle-stretched US military Saturday vowed to keep up US assistance in Haiti as long as needed on Saturday as it pointed to a likely 45 to 50 day armed mission. Colonel Gregory Kane, one of the top US commanders in the field, said American involvement in Haiti would last as long as the conditions in the earthquake-shattered county required, but that military operations could end as little as 45 days after the January 12 quake. "We are in Haiti as long as needed and are welcomed by the government of Haiti" said Kane, who directs ...
Rash of retirements push Social Security to brink
(USA Today) Social Security's annual surplus nearly evaporated in 2009 for the first time in 25 years as the recession led hundreds of thousands of workers to retire or claim disability. The impact of the recession is likely to hit the giant retirement system even harder this year and next. The Congressional Budget Office had projected it would operate in the red in 2010 and 2011, but a deeper economic slump could make those losses larger than anticipated. "Things are a little bit worse than had been expected," says Stephen Goss, chief actuary for the Social Security ...
