SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Opponents of the Trans-Texas Corridor and the tolling of freeways don’t want to have to say “we ‘tolled’ you so” to anyone concerned about these matters who misses their chance to provide input at a governmental meeting Oct. 26 and help kill the tolling of freeways.

According to the ever-vigilant groups Texans United for Reform and Freedom (TURF), and the San Antonio Toll Party, a meeting of the Metropolitan Planning Organization will feature a crucially-important vote that evening on whether to drop plans to toll U.S. 281 and the 1604 Loop in greater San Antonio.

“Please help us spread the word to your neighborhoods, community groups, friends, and neighbors,” TURF leader Terri Hall proclaimed in an online news bulletin. “On Oct. 26 [a Monday], the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) will vote on whether or not to remove 281 and 1604 from the toll plans and fix them as non-toll freeways.”

Hall and company have always supported the commonplace use of gasoline taxes to finance highway repairs and expansions, while steadfastly opposing tolling freeways and the sale of freeways to foreign companies for tolling schemes that last 50 years. And of course, construction of the super-wide Trans-Texas Corridor – a large element of the overall NAFTA Superhighway – is out of the question.

The MPO meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at the Alzafar Shrine Temple, 901 1604 W, San Antonio. Interested persons can download the following flyer, make copies (2-sided, cut in half) and distribute them: http://www.fixgridlock.com/MPO-281-vote.pdf

Hall summarized that this tolling scheme, if implemented, would mean the following:

• $12/day or $3,000/year in new toll-taxes! (Based on published estimates)

• Guarantees congestion by prohibiting expansion of free routes! (Prevents surrounding arteries like Stone Oak, Blanco, Bulverde, Bandera, Braun, and Shaenfield from being widened)

• TRIPLE TAXATION! (1. Taxpayers paid for existing road; 2. Authorities will use tax dollars to build toll system; 3. They will charge toll-tax to drive on it)

• Hands public roads to foreign corporations for 50 years. (Two Spanish companies already have five contracts in Texas)

• Businesses will pass toll-tax on to YOU! (Prices for goods and services will skyrocket) ###
