The devastating impact of off-shoring American jobs to other countries is no more apparent than in the apparel manufacturing industry. From 1990 to 2011, 80% of the jobs in this industry disappeared in the U.S., downsizing from 902,800 to 151,800. Just 11 years ago, there were 15,478 apparel businesses employing 426,027 workers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. By 2010, the numbers had plummeted to 7,855 businesses employing 157,587 people. There are now only two counties in the entire country that have more than 500 apparel business establishments: Los Angeles County (2,509) and New York County (803). |
