I love to report on stories where ordinary, law-abiding American citizens use their liberty to defend themselves. This is such a story. An 80-year-old West Virginia man foiled an intrusion into his home by two young men and a woman with courage and his pistol.

WV Metro News reports:

An elderly man opened fire on three suspects who tried to force their way into and rob his home in Fairmont, killing one and sending another to the hospital late Monday, Fairmont Police said.

The 80-year-old man, whose name has not been released, told officers a young female approached his house in the 700 block of Gaston Avenue around midnight on Tuesday claiming that she needed to use his phone for an emergency.

Suspicious that someone would be knocking at the door, the man had concealed a pistol on his person before answering it. The man allowed the girl to come in when two men dressed in dark clothes forced their way inside the house, investigators said.

The suspects, later identified as Larry Shaver, 28, of Fairmont and John Grossklaus, 28, of Fairmont, threatened the victim with what appeared to be a handgun and demanded various items, according to Fairmont Police.

The man pulled his pistol on the trio and at least three of the rounds he fired hit Grossklaus and Shaver. Kabiru fled the scene. She was later apprehended.

Shaver was found in the street by police responding to the call. After medics arrived he was pronounced dead from gunshot wounds to the head and neck.

Grossklaus was apprehended across the street with a gunshot wound to the lower torso. He was transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital where he was listed as in stable condition. However, he was later released from the hospital, arraigned and sent to the North Central Regional Jail.

Fortunately for the homeowner, the intruders were only armed with pellet guns while he was armed with a real one.

No charges against the elderly man were made since he believed his life was in danger during the apparent early morning robbery attempt. This is a part of the God given rights that are protected in the latter part of the Second Amendment. This, my friends, are what many politicians seeking your vote to represent you are seeking to infringe upon and, therefore, indirectly threatening not only your liberty, but your life.
