Do You Celebrate A Square On A Calendar?

When I ask you about the 4th of July celebration, what comes to mind? Barbecue? Parades? Fire works and a party? A day away from the job?

When I ask you about Independence Day what comes to mind? The same thing? Or do those words bring to your mind a gathering in Philadelphia in 1776? A gathering of men who could have lived their lives quite comfortably and in wealth, but chose, instead, to liberate the people of 13 colonies from the rule of a tyrant? To liberate a continent from monarchical rule and to animate and quicken the opportunity to breathe free and self-govern, if people are brave enough to take it? They invited the wrath of the King of England* down upon their heads when they could have lived long lives of relative ease.

This Independence Day, this July 4th, remember why we celebrate. Remember that our nation, a work and a hope continuously in progress, imperfectly founded by imperfect men whose statues are being thrown down, is, more than any other, a land where people are able to self-govern and breathe free. But remember that this will only be true as long as you- the individual- and you, the people, spend time and effort in vigilance, standing against those who would take your freedom and put you under the thumb of men who would rule you, instead of empower you. Evil succeeds when good men do nothing, because evil men are always at work; we see them working in the streets of major cities smashing, looting and killing, while they are backed by liberals and Democrats in State Capitals and in Washington DC. They work iniquity and will continue to do so as long as good men allow them.

So, what do you celebrate, a square on a calendar, or memorable events and people? After all, do you wish people a Happy Fourth Thursday in November, or Happy Thanksgiving? Do you tell others, “Merry December 25th” or Merry Christmas? Happy January 1st or Happy New Year? Happy February 14th and Happy March 17th or Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy St. Patrick’s Day? Is June 14th only President Trump’s birthday, or is it also Flag Day?

You can call Cheerios Spaghettios if you want, but that doesn’t make them the neat, round spaghetti you can eat with a spoon.
