A Missouri state senator who publicly called for Trump’s assassination says she has to plans to vacate her seat in the state legislature, despite widespread calls for her resignation over her hateful comment.

Maria Chappelle-Nadal made the Facebook comment Thursday in response to a man who claimed his cousin is a Secret Service agent.

The Missouri state senator, who represents Missouri’s 14th District, made the now-deleted Facebook comment in response to a man who claimed his cousin is a Secret Service agent.

She quickly deleted the post, but not before screenshots of it had hit Twitter and other social media outlets, sparking widespread outrage. Chappelle-Nadal later confirmed to local media outlets that she did in fact make the post, claiming she didn’t really mean it in the first place. She told the St. Louis Post Dispatch, “I put that up on my personal Facebook and I should not have.”

“It was in response to the concerns that I am hearing from residents of St. Louis,” she alleged. “I have deleted it, and it should have been deleted, but there is something way more important that we should be talking about.”

The Missouri lawmaker then sought to deflect from her own call to assassinate the President of the United States by claiming she was only responding to fears of racism from black members of her community, claiming, “There are people who are afraid of white supremacists, there are people who are having nightmares. There are people who are afraid of going out in the streets. It’s worse than even Ferguson.”
