The seven-year-old girl who was critically injured after she was shot while trick-or-treating in Chicago on Thursday has been pictured, as the 15-year-old gang member who allegedly fired the bullets is due in court.

Giselle Zamago was dressed as Minnie Mouse and was trick-or-treating with her father in the Little Village neighborhood on the city’s West Side when shots rang out and she was hit twice.

The second grader is still in the hospital where she is in stable condition and is being treated for bullet wounds in her neck and chest as her family pleads for support in her recovery.

The 15-year-old gang member who allegedly fired the gun, aiming for a rival gangster, is expected to face a judge in juvenile court on Monday morning. He was arrested and charged with attempted murder on Friday.

Police believe the gunman is a member of the Gangster Two-Six gang and was targeting a Latin King when he fired into a crowd and shot little Giselle as she walked down the street.

‘So many kids were excited to ask for candy. It’s not fair, but thank God, people have prayed for my girl. She’s good now, and we hope that nothing like this happens again,’ Giselle’s aunt Sanjuana Zamago said to NBC. ‘These people should not be loose on the streets’.

‘I couldn’t speak. I just started crying. I felt sad,’ Giselle’s cousin Areli Garcia said Sunday to CBS. ‘It was going through my mind, why her? Why that got to happen to her? She didn’t deserve it.’

Chilling video footage from the incident shows a barrage of gunfire erupt on the streets and people in Halloween masks fleeing the area.

Police say that a 15-year-old teenager opened fire around 5.30pm near the intersection of 26th Street near Lawndale Avenue. He allegedly shot at least seven times into a crowd of trick-or-treating children.

Police said the assailant was wearing a white ‘Jason’ mask while firing at a rival gang member. The ‘Jason’ mask is a hockey goaltender mask used by a killer in the horror film Friday the 13th Part III.

Before opening fire he allegedly shouted a Kings insult yelling ‘Two-Six! and ‘King killa!’ He ended up hitting his target – a 32-year-old man – who was wounded in the hand, police said.

He faces two felony counts of attempted first degree murder and two felony counts of aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm.

He appeared in juvenile court over the weekend where he was ordered to be held until a second hearing on Monday.

‘He transformed (the street) into a real-life horror movie,’ Assistant State’s Attorney Jack Ruggiero said during the hearing, according to the Chicago Tribune.

After the shooting the 15-year-old boy then allegedly ran into an alley and threw the gun in a trash can. It is claimed he urinated on his hands to get rid of the gunpowder residue and gave the hoodie he was wearing to a friend to hide, which police later recovered.

Cops say the rival gang member he was targeting is not cooperating in the investigation.

Giselle was hit in the spray of bullets. As people around her fled she dropped to the ground after being hit in her neck and chest.

She was rushed to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. Though her condition has improved she faces a difficult road to recovery.

‘She couldn’t say nothing. She was just moving her head; saying yes to everything,’ Garcia said. ‘She couldn’t even open her eyes a lot.’

The little girl still has to undergo at least two surgeries and her family believes she’ll be in the hospital for up to two weeks.

‘We’re happy now, because we got through a nightmare, that I don’t know how…’ Sanjuana Zamago said.

‘Giselle’s health update, she is doing better compared to yesterday. She is able to stay in a seated upright position and was awake for the majority of our visit. The doctor’s are slowly removing auxiliary medical equipment. And they hope that soon she will no longer need this medical equipment and will be able to walk once she feels better,’ a health update on her GoFundMe page shared Sunday said.

That GoFundMe page has raised over $6,000 as of Monday morning, surpassing the $5,000 goal.

A visibly angry Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson called the child’s shooting ‘reprehensible’ during a press conference Friday morning.

‘I am disgusted but committed to doing everything I can to find the cowards that would engage in a gun battle in the early evening hours while children were trick-or-treating,’ the superintendent said.

One witness described how the girl’s father screamed after his daughter was hit.

‘We heard the shots … four shots, and I went outside,’ said Lali Lara, who works in a nearby cellphone store, told the Chicago Tribune. ‘The girl’s father was screaming, ‘My little girl’s been shot’.’

Lara said she pressed on the girl’s chest wound to staunch the bleeding and was calling her by name to keep her alert.

‘She was looking at me and I was calling her name,’ the woman to the paper. ‘She was holding my hand for three minutes and then she let me go.’

An ambulance arrived five minutes later and whisked the wounded child away to the hospital.

‘This is unacceptable,’ Sgt. Alioto said. ‘A 7-year-old girl that was trick-or-treating with her family had to get shot because a group of guys want to shoot at another male while there’s a street full of kids trick-or-treating.’
