(ConservativePeak.com) – In news that might sound too good to be true, Democrats in Virginia have actually shelved plans to ban assault weapons.

The government of Virginia, which is controlled by Democratic lawmakers, rejected a proposed ban on assault weapons by Governor Ralph Northam, choosing instead to push the vote to next year.

Instead of passing the bill, a committee in the State Senate voted to push the vote to 2021 while the state crime commission performs a full investigation into the issue.

The Associated Press reported:

“Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s push to ban the sale of assault weapons failed on Monday after some of his fellow Democrats balked at the proposal.

Senators voted to shelve the bill for the year and ask the state crime commission to study the issue, an outcome that drew cheers from a committee room packed with gun advocates.”

The report also said that four moderate Democrats had made it happen by joining with Republicans in voting to reject the legislation. Had it gone ahead, some semiautomatic firearms, notably AR-15-style guns that are popular with enthusiasts, would have been banned from sale. It would have also banned the possession of magazines that contain more than 12 rounds.
