WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s partner Stella Morris spoke about his fight for “life,” “press freedom” and “truth” during a statement in front of London’s Central Criminal Court on Thursday. The same day Judge Vanessa Baraitser was quoted in media as saying that the verdict in Assange’s US extradition trial will be announced on January 4th.

“It’s a fight for Julian’s life, a fight for press freedom, and a fight for the truth. Over the past four weeks, the true nature of this prosecution has come to light. Julian has been punished for performing a public service. And foreign power has ripped away his freedom and has torn our family apart. That power wants to put him in incommunicado detention in the deepest, darkest hole of its prison system for the rest of his life.”

Assange has been behind bars in Belmarsh Prison since he was dragged out of the Ecuadorian Embassy in April 2019. He is facing a 175-year prison sentence and will need to spend Christmas in prison contemplating a ruling in the new year on whether he should be extradited to face the prosecution.

“The US administration will not stop with him. The US says that it can put any journalist anywhere in the world on trial in the US. If it doesn’t like what they are publishing,” said Stella Morris.

“Julian is a publisher. Julian is also a son. He is a friend. He is my fiancé. And a father. Our children need their father. Julian needs his freedom and our democracy needs a free press,” she added.
