The US will “soon” have laws to punish “illegal hate speech,” EU Commission VP for Values and Transparency Vera Jourova told the World Economic Forum on Tuesday.

“Illegal hate speech, which you will have soon also in the U.S. I think that we have a strong reason why we have this in the criminal law,” Jourova said.

As I reported on Tuesday, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) introduced a bill to the House that would make it a potential “hate crime” for white people to criticize non-white people and Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) claimed recently that espousing “hate” is “not protected under the First Amendment.”

New York state also passed a bill last year aimed at suppressing “hateful” speech online.

During the same WEF panel, New York Times owner Arthur Sulzberger whined about the “existential” threat of “disinformation” and said people criticizing “fake news” reminds him of Nazi Germany.
