While Democrats in Washington, DC are stripping away the Second Amendment for all point and purpose, in the Ogden City, Utah the right of a heroic teacher to bear arms has once again saved lives. Earlier this week in Ogden City,  an armed teacher prevented an 11-year-old girl from being abducted by Ira Cox-Berry, 41.

According to the Ogden City Police Department’s Press Release,

“On Tuesday, May 25th officers were dispatched to a local elementary school on report of an attempted kidnaping. The initial Information suggested the 41-year-old suspect, Ira Cox-Berry approached and grabbed one of the students (an 11-year-old girl) on the playground. Cox-Berry pulled the child away as if he intended to leave with her. A nearby school employee confronted Cox-Berry and demanded he leave. Cox-Berry temporarily unhanded the student, allowing the employee time to usher the children into an adjacent classroom.”

Cox-Berry wasn’t finished though. He approached the school building and began punching and attempting to break in a window to force his way inside the classroom. In response to the increased threat, the teacher unholstered their concealed sidearm and drew down on Cox-Berry while calling 911.

Ogden City Police arrived shortly after and took the assailant into custody after a struggle. Police confirmed that the teacher was in legal possession of the firearm and is a concealed carry permit holder.

According to The Epoch Times,

“Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, a Republican in his first term, signed a measure into law in February that allows people in the state to carry a concealed gun without a permit.

“This bill protects Second Amendment rights, reduces permit-less open carry (which is already legal), and includes significant funding for suicide prevention,”

No Charges or Disciplinary Action for Heroic Teacher

In all of these stories you always hope that no harm came to the hero, and in this one, we get a happy ending. A girl was saved, a criminal arrested and charged, and a heroic teacher has been honored, not punished.

Local News station KIRO7 reported, that the teacher will not be charged for showing his firearm during the incident.

“This employee is protected under the Second Amendment,” Lt. Brian Eynon told WTVX. “He followed all policy and procedure at the school, and in this particular case, did everything that he should have done to protect the innocent lives of the children at the school. And in this case, it is likely that a life was saved or injury to a life was prevented due to the actions of this heroic employee.”

The Ogden School District’s Jer Bates, said the teacher acted in an appropriate fashion.

“A teacher intervened when there was a situation that threatened students’ safety. This teacher, this school employee, is a hero. We don’t disagree with that at all,” Bates said. “Yes, it was a very scary situation, something we take very seriously, but it came out with a good ending, meaning no students were physically harmed, no adults were physically harmed, that this was an incident where our emergency response protocols were acted out.”

Counselors are working with the kidnapping victim and other students who were frightened during the breach of school security. “At this time, to the best of our knowledge, the student is coping quite well considering the very traumatic experience that they endured,” Bates said.

Cox-Berry has been charged with one count of child kidnapping, a first-degree felony. Ogden City PD have been unable to establish any link between the would-be kidnapper and his victim.
