WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arrested in London, on April 11,2018, after almost 7 years in the Ecuadorian Embassy.
The founder of WikiLeaks was removed from the Ecuadorian Embassy and taken into police custody. Julian Assange, 47, has been under diplomatic protection since 2012 when Ecuador offered protection following sexual assault allegations leveled against him in Sweden.
Julian Assange has been arrested by British police today after Ecuador dramatically withdrew his political asylum seven years after he was given refuge in the country’s London embassy. The Wikileaks founder, sporting a scruffy beard and unkempt hair, was dragged out of the building head-first in handcuffs by a group of seven men as stunned supporters watched on as he screamed out ‘the UK must resist’. Ecuador’s president Lenin Moreno said the decision to withdraw Assange’s asylum status followed his ‘discourteous and aggressive behaviour’ in continuing to work with WikiLeaks while housed at the embassy. He went on to accuse Assange of violating the terms of his asylum by ‘interfering in internal affairs of other states’ as well as ‘blocking security cameras’ at the embassy and ‘confronting and mistreating guards’. In a statement today, Ecuador’s president added that he had asked Britain to guarantee that Assange would not be extradited to any country where he could face torture or the death penalty. It was accidentally revealed last year that Assange had been secretly indicted by the US Justice Department, but the exact nature of the charges against the 47-year-old was not disclosed. Assange, who has overseen the publication of thousands of classified military and diplomatic cables through WikiLeaks, is currently in custody and is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court ‘as soon as possible’. Nearly 7yrs after entering the Ecuadorean Embassy, I can confirm Julian Assange is now in police custody and rightly facing justice in the UK. I would like to thank Ecuador for its cooperation & @metpoliceuk for its professionalism. No one is above the law
So, one unarmed guy, Julian Assange, who’s been effectively under house arrest for seven years, needed seven men to arrest him when Equador rescinded his asylum? That seems a little extreme.
It looks like he will be extradited to America. If so, what should we do with him when he gets here?
We The People wanted a ‘new sheriff’ in town to change the direction the nation was taking and put the DC swamp rats in their place. So we elected one. He’s made some solid progress already. Massively cutting Red Tape, and cutting taxes was a good start. Breaking the back of ISIS and bringing our trade partners to the table, was good too.
