Parents are being warned that a Disney Channel series has introduced the network’s first “gay” character – in hopes, according to the show’s creator, of “attract[ing] an older audience.”

The activist group OneMillionMoms.com is warning parents of the direction that the teen-based show Andi Mack is taking in its second season. “This is not a subtle character, this is not subtle hints like they’ve been known to do in the past, but this will be a main character on the program,” reports 1MM director Monica Cole.

An entertainment media outlet reports the season’s premier episode, which aired on Friday (October 27), was screened in advance for several pro-homosexual groups. It featured the character Cyrus Goodman and his struggle with feelings for another boy. Terri Minsky, the creator of Andi Mack, has stated the network asked her “for something different. They wanted to attract an older audience.”

Andi Mack (Disney Channel)There’s no more “skirting around the issue,” says Cole, referring to the network’s decision to pursue such programming.

“They’re blatantly pushing an agenda and airing inappropriate, adult content on a children’s network,” she tells OneNewsNow. “So they’re not only steering clear away from family-friendly entertainment, but they’re sacrificing children’s innocence in the process.”

Obviously Disney doesn’t see it that way, explaining in a statement that their characters “appeal to children across gender, ability, and experience” – and that the company strives to live up to its “legacy” via “compelling storylines [and] inspirational and aspirational themes.”

Cole adds that in hopes of keeping “other shows from introducing gay characters, we need to speak up now.” Toward that end, she urges parents to voice their displeasure with the Disney Channel decision by signing her group’s online petition.
