Members of the Icelandic journalists’ association started an eight-hour strike at 10.00 this morning. The strike includes online journalists, photographers, and camera operators who work under the collective bargaining agreement of the journalists’ association.

The strike means that no new news is appearing on Iceland’s biggest news websites; Vísir, mbl.is, or Frettabladid.is until 18.00 this evening. The strike is having a limited impact on RÚV as well; though a majority of journalists at the national broadcaster are members of the association of broadcast news journalists and are therefore not striking. Camera operators within the journalists’ association are striking, however, which is impacting television news production. The association of broadcast journalists has released a statement in full support of the demands of the journalists’ association for better pay.

The negotiating committees representing the journalists and the SA Confederation of Icelandic Enterprise failed again to reach a deal after six hours of talks yesterday. Another meeting is expected next week.

Members of the journalists’ association went on strike for four hours last Friday, but the union has reported mbl.is to a tribunal for alleged breaches of strike rules on that day.
