Well, as you probably already know, there’s going to be no collusion proven in the Mueller report. Just think, all of those tweets with celebrities and pundits who were absolutely sure that President Trump was going to be impeached. They all look pretty silly now.

Granted, there are plenty of people who are pointing out that arrant silliness on Twitter now, but you didn’t expect Brit Hume to be one of them. Yes, he’s with Fox News, but Hume has typically been a buttoned-up kind of guy, someone who wasn’t known to fire off burns on Twitter.

Yet, that’s exactly what he did over the weekend — and he did it to a number of liberals who came seriously unbuttoned during the whole process.

Take, for instance, Harvard Law professor Laurence Tribe, a noted critic of the Trump administration.

Back during Michael Cohen’s testimony, Tribe tweeted this: “The very fact that Mueller has said Cohen can’t talk about the Trump campaign’s collusion with Russia when testifying to three congressional committees next week means that Mueller’s findings will indeed address that collusion. Watch this space.”

Hume noted that Tribe’s tweet, as the kids like to say, didn’t exactly age well.

“It addressed collusion all right,” Hume wrote.

And indeed it did — as The Washington Times notes, a summary of the report given to Congress by Attorney General William Barr says that there was zero evidence of any collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 election.

Then there was Max Boot, the one-time conservative turned professional NeverTrumper.

“Illegal payment of hush money to the president’s playmates is only one tiny molecule of the titanic iceberg now bearing down on the SS Trump,” he tweeted back in December. “The evidence that the Trump camp conspired with Russian agents to influence the election continues to grow.”

Except it didn’t, giving Hume a moment of levity:

Actor and director Rob Reiner has become occasionally relevant again during the Trump administration, mostly because of the fact that he’s been willing to trash the president on a constant basis.

Here was his take back in December: “The biggest scandal in US history is coming into focus. On Friday Rachel Maddow made it clear. Donald Trump conspired with the enemy. Quid: Deliver the Presidency & build Trump Tower Moscow. Quo: Lift Economic Sanctions. The fat lady is warming up her vocal chords.”

Or not.

And of course there was the ur-NeverTrumper, Bill Kristol: “Lest we lose sight of the forest for the trees: It seems to me likely Mueller will find there was collusion between Trump associates and Putin operatives; that Trump knew about it; and that Trump sought to cover it up and obstruct its investigation,” he tweeted last August. “What then? Good question.”

And then there was 2020 Democrat presidential candidate Robert “Beto” O’Rourke, who was making noises about collusion on Saturday, even as it became clear that no collusion was likely to be contained in the Mueller report.

Hume also went after newer tweets that proclaimed that the whole thing wasn’t over yet, such as this one from Bloomberg editor Tim O’Brien:

Well, that was always the problem, wasn’t it? Hope sprang eternal and hope’s name was Robert Mueller. On Saturday, hope left town.

And being a journalist himself, Hume didn’t let the news media off the hook either.

Hume, by the way, is no Trump sycophant. He’s argued that Trump’s “poor character” could “cripple” his presidency and seriously criticized his performance at the Helsinki summit last year, among other things.

Beyond the source, you also had to factor in the irony. So many people believed that they knew that Trump was going to be hit with collusion accusations in the Mueller report. They were wrong.

They’re never going to apologize, but Brit Hume — as well as the rest of us — can certainly have some fun with the situation.
