Vladimir Putin has reportedly congratulated Donald Trump on winning the US presidential election through “acquaintances” with the hope of it improving Russia’s position in the war with Ukraine
Vladimir Putin passed on his congratulations to Donald Trump through “acquaintances” as the world waits to see how his election win will impact on Ukraine.
The Russian leader used the back channel link in the “hope” that the country’s position in the war with Ukraine will “improve”, said independent Russian news outlet Verstka, citing its own sources in Moscow. Earlier Putin’s spokesman had said: “I’m not aware of any plans by the president to congratulate Trump. Let us not forget that we are talking about an unfriendly country that is both directly and indirectly involved in a war against our nation.”
But Putin along with other senior members of his regime including ex-president Dmitry Medvedev passed on their congratulations “through acquaintances” in the Russian Foreign Ministry, said the report . The outlet stated: “According to several of Verstka’s sources, the unofficial friendliness of the Russian authorities is linked to the hope that thanks to Trump, Russia ’s position in the war with Ukraine will improve.”
One source in the Russian parliament said: “Hopes are primarily associated with the reduction of [military]aid to Ukraine during the ‘special operation’.” The source added: “But Trump, of course, is much more negotiable and better for us than Harris.” Still Moscow does not take seriously Trump’s “idea of ending the war between Russia and Ukraine in one day,” stated the outlet.
Meanwhile outwardly the Putin regime appeared euphoric today with Medvedev saying: “Trump has one quality that is useful for us,” he said. Referring to Ukraine, he stated: “As a businessman to the bone, he is deadly averse to spending money on various minions and acolytes – on moronic allies, on bad charitable projects, and on voracious international organisations.
“Toxic Bandera Ukraine is in the same line. The question is how much Trump will be forced to give for the war.” Trump is “stubborn”, but the US “system” may be “stronger”, he warned. “Either way, today the green scum in Kyiv will be buried up to their ears.”
In Kyiv, Zelensky – seen as having preferred a Kamala Harris victory – said: “I appreciate President Trump’s commitment to the ‘peace through strength’ approach to global affairs. It is this principle that will really bring a just peace to Ukraine. I hope that together we will make it a reality. We look forward to the era of a strong United States under the decisive leadership of President Trump.” He pleaded for “continued strong bipartisan support for Ukraine in the United States”.
He stated: “We are interested in developing mutually beneficial political and economic cooperation that will benefit both of our nations. Ukraine, as one of Europe’s strongest military powers, is committed to ensuring long-term peace and security in Europe and the Transatlantic community with the support of our allies.
“I am looking forward to personally congratulating President Trump and discussing ways to strengthen Ukraine’s strategic partnership with the United States.” Putin’s leading female propagandist Margarita Simonyan – head of RT, and sanctioned by the US during the campaign for interfering in the US election – posted happily: “Trump won. Go to bed, team.”
Major state-controlled Russian 24 channel devoted almost all its coverage to the US election between midnight and 9am in Moscow. The outlet gleefully posted a picture of Zelensky with the line: “On social network X, they found someone who definitely lost from the results of today’s US presidential election.”
Kremlin-funded Readovka media outlet enthusiastically showed a meme video of a weeping Harris crowning a triumphant Trump. Telegram war channel Romanov Light posted: “Trump won the US elections…..the [Ukrainians] are f***ed.”
In fact, the Kremlin does not trust Trump – but believes he will be worse for Ukraine and that the flow of money and weapons from the Biden administration will now stop. The Putin playbook is that Ukraine is controlled by the US – and that changes are afoot.
Extremist military pro-war group Rosich said: “Looks like Ukraine has a new president. But seriously, Ukrainians are in mourning, and their FACE ID is down. Let’s see how Trump will act and, most importantly, how we will react to this.”
In Ukraine, there was gloom among stunned social media commentators ahead of any official reaction. “It doesn’t go into my head how it’s possible,” said one. “Well, the outcome of the war now depends on the Republicans, and they are offended by Zelensky,” posted another.
“This is a f***-up for Europe, Ukraine and the whole world…,” said one more. Another forecast: “He [Trump] will call Putin and guarantee that Ukraine will never be accepted into NATO, and that’s how it will all end. Probably.” While a further said: “Dictatorship,” said another comment. “In the coming days we will see whether Putin really wants to stop the war.”
