Tennessee Republican Governor Bill Lee has kicked the political hornet’s nest by signing a joint resolution declaring June as “Nuclear Family Month” in a direct counterpunch to the LGBTQ movement’s “Pride Month” messaging.
The resolution, originally introduced in 2025, seeks to elevate the importance of the traditional, or nuclear, family as “God’s design for familial structure” and argues that it has “been the bedrock of society since the creation of the world…”
The resolution argues that fatherless families are “four times more likely to live in poverty than married-couple families,” and further condemns the agendas of the World Health Organization and the United Nations, which, it noted, “fight for population control through the means of promoting sterilization and abortion practices.”
The resolution itself does not attack same-sex couples or LGBTQ couples explicitly. Rather, it moves to define the nuclear family as “consisting of one husband, one wife, and any biological, adopted, or fostered children…”
According to WBIR, the governor signed the resolution this month, drawing criticism from the LGBTQ organization GLAAD: “The strongest families are grounded by love. Lawmakers trying to exclude and intentionally harm some families should be recognized as actively harming all by not focusing their time working for an inclusive Tennessee where all are welcome and can succeed.”
Pride Month in the United States dates to the 1970s, when the first “pride” marches were held. It wasn’t until the 1990s that then-President Bill Clinton proclaimed an official “Pride Month” in the U.S. – a declaration later expanded by Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, according to American University.
The celebration of “Pride Month” reached its zenith during the Biden administration, and began drawing criticism as pride events began to prominently feature drag shows and other sexually explicit material in the public arena.
Since the Trump administration’s return to power, there has been a broad decline in Pride Month messaging.
