Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna of California crossed the aisle unexpectedly on Wednesday, and called for other Democratic Party leaders to join  President Donald Trump and codify into law his executive order on prescription drug pricing.

Khanna announced his move days after Trump signed an executive order Monday demanding pharmaceutical companies reduce their prices for American consumers.

The president’s order aims to ensure Americans don’t pay more for medications than people in other countries.

“Today, I am introducing legislation to codify President Trump’s executive order, ensuring Americans do not pay more than people in other countries for drugs,” Khanna wrote in a social media post.”Will Congress members stand with $16 billion in Big Pharma money, or with the American people by co-sponsoring this bipartisan legislation?”

In his floor speech, Khanna challenged his colleagues on both sides of the aisle, stating that if he “can cross the aisle” and support Trump’s executive order in legislation, each Republican “should be willing to cross the aisle” and support his bill.

“Are we going to stand in this body with the $16 billion that Big Pharma spent on lobbying, or are we going to stand with the American people?” Khanna asked. “We will know that answer based on how many co-sponsors we get for my legislation that simply codifies Donald Trump’s executive order.”

Trump’s executive order points out that the United States “has less than five percent of the world’s population and yet funds around three quarters of global pharmaceutical profits.” The president stated during the signing that the measure would reduce drug prices by “between 59 and 80” percent.

“This egregious imbalance is orchestrated through a purposeful scheme in which drug manufacturers deeply discount their products to access foreign markets, and subsidize that decrease through enormously high prices in the United States,” the executive order stated.

Khanna’s legislative effort comes as multiple Republicans are also working to codify Trump’s executive actions. Rep. Andy Ogles, R-T.N., and 16 colleagues, including Reps. Keith Self, R-T.X., Tim Burchett, R-T.N., Eli Crane, R-A.Z., and Brandon Gill, R-T.X., are encouraging House Speaker Mike Johnson to begin turning Trump’s executive orders into law.

“House Republicans made serious campaign promises to enshrine President Trump’s agenda,” Ogles said in a statement. “President Trump is working at a breakneck pace, delivering win after win. He doesn’t take weekends off. He doesn’t take holidays. So why is Congress?”

Prior to introducing the legislation, Khanna had expressed support for Trump’s executive order and said it needed congressional backing to withstand legal challenges.

“I support @realDonaldTrump effort to ensure Americans do not pay more for drugs than those in other countries,” he wrote. “But instead of an EO that will get challenged again by Big Pharma, why not work with @BernieSanders & me to make this law!”

Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-V.T., has also offered support for the initiative but questioned Trump’s commitment to the legislative process.

“If Trump is serious about making real change rather than just issuing a press release, he will support legislation I will introduce to ensure we pay no more for prescription drugs than people in other major countries,” Sanders wrote. “If we come together, we can get it passed in a few weeks.”
