88 former generals, admirals endorse GOP nominee as best pick for commander-in-chief

Nearly 90 retired admirals and generals announced in an open letter Tuesday that Donald Trump is the strongest choice for president to lead the nation as commander-in-chief.

The letter was organized by Major General Sidney Shachnowa, a 40-year Army veteran and Holocaust survivor, and Rear Admiral Charles Williams. The letter was released ahead of Trump’s campaign event in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he is anticipated to deliver a speech on veterans affairs.

“We can only make America great again if we ensure our military remains the finest fighting force in the world, and that’s exactly what I will do as president.”

The high-ranking former officers spelled out their intention to vote  for Trump and “urged” fellow Americans to follow suit, emphasizing the need for the next president to take a fresh approach to foreign policy.

“For the past eight years, America’s armed forces have been subjected to a series of ill-considered and debilitating budget cuts, policy choices, and combat operations that have left the superb men and women in uniform less capable of performing their vital missions in the future than we require them to be,” they wrote.

The veterans cited Trump’s ability to more effectively tighten national security.

“We support Donald Trump and his commitment to rebuild our military, to secure our borders, to defeat our Islamic supremacist adversaries, and restore law and order domestically,” the letter read.

Trump expressed gratitude to the veterans for their support.

“It is a great honor to have such amazing support from so many distinguished retired military leaders,” said Trump in a statement. He noted that “keeping our nation safe and leading our armed forces is the most important responsibility of the presidency.”

Trump promised to exude strength on an international stage as president.

“Under my administration, we will end the weak foreign policy of the last eight years, rebuild our military, give our troops clear rules of engagement, and take care of our veterans when they come home,” Trump said, “We can only make America great again if we ensure our military remains the finest fighting force in the world, and that’s exactly what I will do as president.”
