Synopsis

An increase in C-section requests among Indian women in New Jersey follows President Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship. Expectant parents, particularly those on H-1B visas, are rushing to secure U.S. citizenship for their children before the February 20 deadline. Obstetricians caution against preterm births due to potential health risks for both mother and child.

In a race against the clock, many expectant Indian parents in the U.S. are opting for preterm C-sections to beat the February 20 deadline for birthright citizenship, Times of India’s Amisha Rajani has reported.
President Donald Trump’s executive order ending automatic citizenship for babies born to non-permanent residents has left families scrambling to ensure their children’s futures.
“A seven months pregnant woman came with her husband to sign up for a preterm delivery. She isn’t due until sometime in March,” Dr. Rama shared in a conversation with TOI.

Many Indian women, particularly those in their eighth or ninth month of pregnancy, are seeking to schedule C-sections before February 20, the date after which babies born to non-permanent residents will no longer automatically receive U.S. citizenship.
