Think back, can you remember? The man who was faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound? Superman was the man who fought for Truth, Justice and the American Way. Have we all forgotten?

WHERE IS TRUTH?

How can you explain truth when we see a man who was supposed to protect us––our entire population––take the 5th 111 times when interrogated about his key, major, central role in the devastating Covid-19 epidemic/pandemic? Just exposing him to sunshine proved to be an antiseptic in itself!

Truth wins out with exposure to those who misrepresent themselves and delude the masses for their own selfish and self-aggrandizing reasons.

James Madison said, “The success of the republic relies heavily on the moral character of its citizens, emphasizing the need for ethical judgement.” While Founding Father John Adams said, “The Government cannot contend with human passions unbridled by morality,” highlighting the necessity of virtue for a stable government.

WHAT IS VIRTUE?

By definition, virtue is a morally positive trait or quality––it is behavior showing high moral standards. But where has it gone? Just like we failed to monitor the schools our children were being educated in, and the teachers who were teaching them the “virtues” of socialism and communism, we were too busy to notice how morality went the way of expediency.

About 35 years ago, I entered a middle school in an effort to interest children in “Aviation through Mathematics”. United Airlines provided custom-made posters of the Lift-Drag Equation and the Pythagorean Theorem. I never come straight at the children with mathematical facts but started with John Paul Jones. Sadly the 9th graders didn’t know––had never been taught––who JPJ was. So, I explained that he was the first ship captain to take the new American flag into battle. As I said it, I turned to point to our flag but there was none! Subsequently, I organized our Kiwanis and Veterans of Foreign Wars to put flags in every classroom.

The year before this event, I had visited Kill Devil Hills, NC, where the Wright brothers made their first powered flight. When I visited the museum, it featured their original notebook. There it was––the Lift-Drag equation. We were taught they were bicycle makers. Wrong! These two men were some of the greatest physicists of the 20th century. They developed the wind tunnel to disprove other physicists like Germany’s Otto Lilienthal, who was wrong on lift.

The Wright brothers developed wing-warping to provide differential lift on wings. Glenn Curtis, the first man to fly one mile in public, later replaced it with ailerons that changed the Camber of the end of the wing without warping it, which allowed it to maintain structural integrity.

Why did I choose to start my teaching gig about John Paul Jones? At that time, when Ronald Reagan was President, the PM of Japan made a comment that the USA could never compete with the Japanese because of the mixed races in our country. Economically, the USA was behind Japan and China because we gave away our production to China, Vietnam, Canada and S. Korea. And Jones was in a classic battle with two ships, the Bonhomme Richard and the HMS Serapis, off the coast of Britain, His ship was sinking and he was asked to surrender, to which he gave his famous answer––“I have not yet begun to fight!” His heroic bravado proved to be correct. A Marine in the rigging threw a grenade into the “Serapis,” blowing out its gun deck and the Captain of the British ship surrendered!

JUSTICE

“Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you God?” This is the oath a juror or witness must swear to before giving testimony in any court of law. This is the most difficult question to answer. We see daily demonstrations of “fake news” or a legislator lying in a speech and it’s ignored. Only when someone or something makes claims that are so false and damaging do we hear the words “Libel” or “Defamation” used. And then, only after a trial, can damages be awarded.

Today, we have people running for office in our government who if elected must take an oath “to defend the Constitution” but don’t even believe in it. The platform for their party espouses destruction of our Constitution and Democratic Republic. At the end of the Constitutional Convention in 1789, someone asked Ben Franklin. “What have you given us, Dr. Franklin?” He answered, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”

For 237 years we have kept it. We are one of the oldest Republics in history. How many of us really understand the genius of our founding fathers and how they dealt with the different states’ rights and economics of each state?

THE AMERICAN WAY

“The Shining city on a hill” was first quoted in Matthew 5:14-16. It was later (1630) used by Puritan pilgrim John Winthrop to describe their future in America while still aboard ship. Finally, by Ronald Reagan in his farewell address in 1989. Matthew describes it as, “16: In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven”

That is the ultimate description of the American way. During a fire fight in Iraq, a US Medic ran out and tended to a wounded soldier in the middle of the road. When he dragged him back behind our lines to protect him, a foreign correspondent said, “That is one of theirs you just saved, did you know that?” The medic answered, “Yes, that’s what we do!”

That simple answer is the American Way. During my lifetime alone, we have liberated hundreds of millions of people around the world. The only land we ask for is a six-foot plot to bury our dead.

While on a tour in Austria, we were visiting a WW2 memorial cemetery. I was very impressed with our guide’s ability to remember her country’s past and its Emperors for the last 500 years. I commented on it and how we Americans know so little of our past. She said, “All you have to remember is that you gave liberty to the world”.

Look up in the sky. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Superman. That immortal who for the last 250 years fought for Truth, Justice and the American way. He can be seen in every child who says, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Look a little further and see every young person who raises his or her right hand and pledges “To defend the Constitution from all enemies foreign or domestic, so help me God.”

He was there in G. Washington, A. Lincoln, and the other 45 Presidents who with the help of God guided this country to prosperity and through wars and ultimately to peace. Thank you to all the Supermen and Women who have brought us to this point in history.
