The phrase banana republic was coined in 1901 by the American writer O. Henry (aka William Sydney Porter), 1862–1910.

A class-action suit is being brought in The World Court by the South American Banana Republics Enterprises (SABRE) to cut through the slander.
The suit is being brought against various elected officials of the United States of America who disparagingly refer to nations which fail to exercise fair elections as “Banana Republics.”
When asked for his thoughts about the elections in the states of Wisconsin, Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia, SABRE’s representative responded, “Our elections are much more fair than the elections run by Democrats and protected by crooked media in these states.”
He followed his expression of disgust with a vigorous spitting on the floor and grabbing of his crotch.  “Of course,” he continued, “nations which hold such crooked elections should now be referred to as big D “Democratic Media” states or Cheese Republics, Cactus Republics, Bandit Republics, Auto Republics, Fricking Fracking Republics or Peach Republics.”
