Spain’s supreme court has sentenced nine Catalan leaders up to 13 years in prison on charges of sedition. The Catalonia separatists conducted a peaceful attempt to win independence, and filed a referendum in 2017 that was declared unconstitutional by Spain. A general strike brought the city to a standstill and there has been violent unrest for a week.
