Scary Statistic About Americans Will Have You Shaking Your Head

Some statistics can scare you, can really terrify you, because you know that the statistic indicates huge problems coming down the pike if something doesn’t change.

This is one of them.

In a recent survey, a full one-third of Americans could not name a single right protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution. You read that correctly. Not one.

Not the right to free speech. Not the right to freedom of religion. Not freedom of the press. nor the right to assemble, nor the right to petition. None of them.

The survey had this to say:

“When asked to name the five specific freedoms in the First Amendment, 57% of Americans name freedom of speech, followed by 19% who say the freedom of religion, 10% mention the freedom of the press, 10% mention the right to assemble, and 2% name the right to petition. Thirty-three percent of Americans cannot name any of the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment.

“Over the past year, those naming freedom of speech decreased from 68 to 57%, freedom of religion decreased from 29 to 19%, and freedom of the press declined from 14 to 10%.” (hat tip to here for the source)

Think about that. If this many people cannot name a single one of the rights protected by the First Amendment, especially the right to assemble and the right to petition for redress of grievances, then how can we expect to protect these rights and protect our children from an over-reaching Federal government that doesn’t acknowledge or obey the rights in part because the people running the government don’t know those rights either?

The next question, after you pick up your jaw from the floor and stop shaking your head in disgust (if not this, what are they learning in school anyway?), is how do we fix this problem so that we can keep our republic and pass it to our children?

Tell us how you would fix this societal problem in the comments below.
