CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers have rejected a public lands bill championed by southern Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy.
Assembly members voted 8-34 to shoot down AB 408 on Tuesday night. Eight Republican Assembly members voted for the measure.
The original proposal would require the federal government to obtain permission to use land within the state’s borders and also strips the federal government of state water rights. Nevada’s Legislative Council Bureau called the original bill unconstitutional.
Two amendments, including one that would have restored original language to the bill, were overwhelmingly defeated on Tuesday.
The bill passed out an Assembly committee earlier in April after being heavily gutted and amended to only say that county sheriffs are the primary law enforcement in unincorporated parts of counties.
