This is one of the unfortunate realities of politics. You campaign on one thing to get elected, and once you’re in, you can do whatever you want.

I’m not saying that that’s going to be the general tenor of Trump’s administration, but prosecuting Hillary was one of the big issues that he talked about during his campaign. And now that he won, he’s saying his administration is not going to pursue charges against her for her private email server use, or for her pay-to-play scheme with the Clinton Foundation.

Kellyanne Conway told MSNBC hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough that the President-elect is helping Hillary Clinton “heal”:

“I think when the President-elect, who’s also the head of your party, tells you before he’s even inaugurated that he doesn’t wish to pursue these charges, it sends a very strong message, tone, and content to the members,” Conway said.

“And I think Hillary Clinton still has to face the fact that the majority of Americans don’t find her to be honest and trustworthy. But if Donald Trump can help her heal, then perhaps that is a good thing. Look, I think he’s thinking of many different things as he is preparing to become president of the United States, and things that sound like the campaign aren’t among them.”

Trump is indeed “thinking of many different things.” He’s got advisors and strategists all around him, telling him what to say and what to do.

Does this mean that Hillary’s going to get away scot-free? Not necessarily. Trump is only removing himself personally from the issue. Other departments like the DOJ – potentially to be headed by Jeff Sessions – could still pursue these charges against her and against the Clinton Foundation using a special prosecutor. Unless President Trump orders his entire administration to drop the case under the threat of losing their jobs.
