Watch 5 Cops Beat 1 Unarmed Man To Death… And Play “Weekend At Bernie’s”?

The above video is a story from about a week ago. But the lawyer for the victim’s family just released the wife’s phone video of the beating and aftermath.

Here’s the video, complete with voice of wife pleading as she watches herself move closer and perhaps into widowhood in the parking lot of a movie theater in Moore, Oklahoma.

[I wasn’t able to embed it from the news site when I first posted, but it has since been posted to youtube. Here it is below:]

As they press him to death, one of the “law enforcement officers” helpfully suggests, “Calm down, sir.”

He seems to have completely complied.

The video never shows him moving. The cops don’t seem to act like they need to revive him. One says that they have “called for medical.” Weirdly, though, they prop him up into the sitting position.

Why? Are they afraid someone might notice something wrong if they let him lie still? Are they copying a dark comedy from the 80s?

One cop interrogates the wife as she continues to ask about her husband. The video is blocked. And then as the medics do something, suddenly she has a moment of realization. She screams. “You killed my husband.” The officer stays with her and keeps assuring her that her husband is breathing and the he is “OK.” But there is no indication he is getting any of his information from the medics. She keeps calling out to them, “Tell me that he is breathing.” But the only one who speaks to her is the one cop there to handle her.

One bitter irony of this is that the victim, Luis Rodriguez, was not the reason for the domestic call that brought the police to the movie theater. Nevertheless, he was the one who died.

From News 9:

Police say the 44-year-old Rodriguez became uncooperative when officers questioned him about a possible domestic disturbance. Police handcuffed the man.

Rodriguez’s wife and daughter say police then started beating him. Autopsy results are pending.

The Rodriguez family’s lawyer released a cellphone video of the incident and a statement at a Tuesday news conference in Oklahoma City.

The video shows 44-year-old Luis Rodriguez on his stomach on the ground outside the theater with five police officers restraining him. One officer holds Rodriguez’s head down and the others are on top of him as they handcuff his hands behind his back.

Rodriguez’s wife, who shot the video, is later heard screaming and asking if Rodriguez is dead as he is placed on a stretcher.

We have attached the video to this story. Warning: the video may be considered graphic to some viewers.

“He was not involved in the disturbance. However, when police came, they focused their attention on Luis. Taking him face down onto the pavement, pepper-spraying his mouth, nose and eyes and putting the weight of five grown men on top of him, and then handcuffing him as he was unconscious or already dead,” said Michael Brooks-Jimenez, attorney for the Rodriguez family.

Moore Police Chief Jerry Stillings said he stands behind his officers’ actions and said he did not see anything inappropriate on the cell phone video as far as his officers’ actions.

The police chief isn’t the only one, a former homicide investigator assured NewsChannel4 in OKC: “This is pretty benign as far as police procedure goes. Everything is textbook.”

So if you have a problem with this, there is obviously something wrong with you. I’m sure a grand jury would have no problem with the cops just doing their job of protecting and serving. A California jury would certainly acquit them.

Or maybe we need a new textbook.
