The Tesla tech mogul Elon Musk is preparing to unveil new computers that can be fitted directly into the human brain.
In a tweet, he confirmed his firm was working on this potentially world-changing technology and promised to reveal details of the research “next month”.
He made the astonishing confession after being asked if Tesla was working on “neural lace”.
This phrase was first cooked up by science fiction writer Iain M. Banks and refers to a way of interfacing computers directly with human thoughts and feelings.
It is not known how advanced Musk’s plans are, but it seems likely that humans will one day want to plug straight into the internet, rather than using their hands and eyes to access it through a computer.
Last year, he tweeted: “Creating a neural lace is the thing that really matters for humanity to achieve symbiosis with machines.”
